Useful information on registering a death

The time frame for registering a death in Scotland is 8 days. Some helpful information is listed below, but if you require more personal assistance, we would be glad to guide you through the process.

Information on how to register a death in Scotland

  • List of people who can register the death:
    • a relative of the deceased
    • any person present at time of death
    • the person who lives in the house where the death took place
    • the deceased’s executor or legal representative
    • any other person who has the relevant information other than the funeral director
  • Information required by the registrar:
    • full name of the deceased (maiden surname if applicable)
    • their usual address
    • date and place of birth
    • date and place of death
    • occupation
    • spouse's name
    • spouse's occupation
    • name of family doctor
  • Death certificate issued by the doctor will be required by the registrar
  • Supporting documents may be useful: birth certificate, marriage certificate, medical card

At the time of registration, these documents will be issued:

  • A white form (Form 14) which you must give to the funeral director
  • A green form (Form 334 S1) for adjusting or obtaining Social Security benefits
  • An abbreviated Extract of Death
