The time frame for registering a death in Scotland is 8 days. Some helpful information is listed below, but if you require more personal assistance, we would be glad to guide you through the process.
Information on how to register a death in Scotland
- List of people who can register the death:
- a relative of the deceased
- any person present at time of death
- the person who lives in the house where the death took place
- the deceased’s executor or legal representative
- any other person who has the relevant information other than the funeral director
- Information required by the registrar:
- full name of the deceased (maiden surname if applicable)
- their usual address
- date and place of birth
- date and place of death
- occupation
- spouse's name
- spouse's occupation
- name of family doctor
- Death certificate issued by the doctor will be required by the registrar
- Supporting documents may be useful: birth certificate, marriage certificate, medical card
At the time of registration, these documents will be issued:
- A white form (Form 14) which you must give to the funeral director
- A green form (Form 334 S1) for adjusting or obtaining Social Security benefits
- An abbreviated Extract of Death
